With its strategic location along the East Coast and situated at the crossroads of Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore, Wicomico County serves as the hub for commerce, industry, health care, education and transportation. Agriculture, health care and education provide a solid economic foundation while new and diverse businesses have fostered a well-balanced economic base.
Agriculture
Agriculture and poultry provide a solid foundation for Wicomico's economy. A wide variety of products are produced including corn, soybeans, wheat, sod, vegetables, flowers, nurseries and much more. In terms of products sold, Wicomico is number one in Maryland
Healthcare
TidalHealth is the region's premier provider of healthcare and one of our region's largest employers. From humble beginnings as a six bed hospital, TidalHealth has grown into a premier medical system, among the top 10% in the nation.
Higher Education
Salisbury University, Wor-Wic Community College and just ten miles to our south, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, comprise our higher education sector. All are major employers and all provide a steady stream of talent for area employers.
Manufacturing
Wicomico is home to nearly one hundred manufacturers making products used by people around the world. Selected manufacturing and processing sectors include electronics, food production, machining and ship building.
Distribution
Given Wicomico's central location at the intersection of two major highways along with a regional airport and port, distribution is a strong and growing economic sector. Industrial park, airport, rail and port sites are available to accommodate distribution needs for the region.
